School Newsletter-February 2020

• Two teams represented the school at the local area Cumann na mBunscol Sports quiz in Carracastle Community Centre. Quiz master, Pat Collins delivered ten rounds of questions covering a broad range of sporting categories. The first team comprised Declan Duffy, Oran Frain, Patrick Regan and Liam Boyle while on the second team, were Amy Hunt, Robbie Dodd, Ryan Egan and Ewan Duffy. Congratulations to Declan, Oran, Patrick and Liam who secured first place, with a score of ninety three out of a total of one hundred. The team was then presented with the plaque for the area winners. Later in the month, the boys proceeded to the County Final in An Sportlann in Castlebar, where they put in a fine performance, finishing in fourth place. Well done to the pupils and to their teacher Mrs Warde, for her preparation of the team.

• All classes participated in the annual Féile Drámaiochta held in Kilmovee Community Centre. Once again the pupils took part at this event but not in the competitive element of the day. Miss Fahey’s Infants and First Class recited a number of poems and sang the popular song ‘Shotgun’ in Irish. Second, Third and Fourth Classes staged ‘Na Leipreacháin agus an Gréasaí’ (The Elves and the Shoemaker) under the direction of Mrs Meehan, while Fifth and Sixth Classes performed ‘Cúchulainn’ which was produced by Mrs Warde. Adjudicator Joe Byrne praised the high standard of Irish and the acting ability of all the children. He noted in particular the way in which they projected their voices and moved about the stage while delivering their lines. The effort that went into sourcing costumes was also lauded. Acting awards went to Ava Casey, James Kelly, Emma Shiel, Michael Duffy, Amy Hunt and Ewan Duffy. Staff prioritised Drama during this month as they are committed to promoting skills such as creativity, communication, cooperation and self-confidence, which are fostered through this process. Engagement in Drama is both memorable and enjoyable for the pupils. It is also an ideal vehicle for cross-curricular learning, supports all aspects of literacy and offers an opportunity for pupils to be active learners. Children had a great day at the Féile and played their part in keeping the tradition of Drámaíocht alive in Kilmovee!

• The Aistear theme in Miss Fahey’s room was Holidays. Pupils talked about going to the airport and even constructed their own airports from lego and bricks. Children made and wrote postcards. They also engaged with Australian and Mexican Art. Many different countries were looked at and discussions were had regarding how to travel to them. Learners are planning their summer holidays already!
