Joy at the Mini 7s

On Friday, October 13th, my classmates and I travelled to Ballaghaderreen GAA pitch to participate in the Mini 7s Gaelic Blitz. We had to ask some girls from 3rd and 4th Class to join us as we didn’t have enough numbers. First we played Ballaghaderreen, they were a very strong team and unfortunately we lost. That meant that we were now in the B Cup. We played Carracastle in the final. We all played brilliantly and in the end we came out on top. I was the captain so I had to say a few words when Mr Bracken presented me with the cup. We were all delighted and now the cup is sitting pride of place on our windowsill in the classroom!

The Day we went to the Mini 7s

We arrived by bus into Ballaghaderreen GAA pitch at 11 o’clock. We walked in as a group to the stand, to put on our football boots and get ready. When ready, we warmed up. We formed a circle and one of us, would stand in the middle and name out stretches and we would do them whilst someone else would count to seven.

We took turns going clockwise around the circle and then someone else would count.

We watched as the girls played their first game and after that we played our first game against Carracastle. It was a tough contest, we played our best, but sadly we lost.

Our next game was against Derrinabroc, we lost that and then we were knocked out. We had played well, but luck wasn’t on our side. Overall we had a great day, and at least we didn’t arrive home ‘trophy less,’ because the girls won their final and lifted their cup with joy!

  • Maths Week was celebrated with an emphasis on showing that Maths is all around us. The skills of observation and estimation were to the forefront of our endeavours. Tangrams, puzzles, bee bots and games were used to emphasise that Maths is enjoyable and fun.

  • The pupils of Second Class had their enrolment Mass for the sacraments of First Eucharist and First Penance. The Grow in Love parish based programme continues this year to support the parents of these pupils as they continue on their faith journey.

  • Pupils worked on the Credit Union Art Competition. The theme this year was ‘My Community and Me’, which led to some varied and interesting pictures. Although it seemed very early, pupils also worked on drawing Christmas scenes which will be printed on professionally produced cards. In order for the design company to have the Christmas cards ready for the festive season, they must be prepared well in advance. We look forward to receiving the finished products!

  • Buddy reading was undertaken with the pupils of First, Third and Fifth Class. This was organised and overseen by Ms Kedian. STEM stations with all classes were coordinated by Mrs Mulderrig. Activities included science/engineering tasks, games to promote strategic thinking, problem solving and the much loved technology station where bee bots were used to teach coding. Learners enjoyed these group activities which help to build relationships, as well as improving literacy and numeracy.

  • Sixth Class pupils attended St Nathy’s College Enrolment evening.

On Thursday, October 19th, the pupils of Kilmovee National School were invited to plant flowers for the opening of the 750m loop walk in the village. The senior pupils in 5th and 6th were group leaders and we helped the younger pupils in our groups. We planted bluebells, daffodils and wildflowers. We enjoyed getting a sneak peak of the walkway, ahead of the official opening. It was fun for everyone and we were glad to play our part in this community project!

  • We said farewell to Ms. Sheila Hunt who has been manager at Kilmovee Community Centre for many years. Sheila has involved us in a myriad of community activities throughout her tenure, for which we are most grateful. We wish her well in her future endeavours.

  • Pupils from Infants to Second Class were invited to a Pumpkin Workshop in Kilmovee Community Centre. Children were each given a pumpkin, and were shown how to scoop it out. Next the staff helped each child to carve and decorate the fruit. The pumpkins were then left to dry and were delivered to the pupils in time for Halloween. This was a marvellous experience for the students and one which they thoroughly enjoyed. We express our gratitude to Geraldine, Hannah and Sandra for facilitating this fantastic workshop!

  • Garda Karen Weymouth spoke to the pupils of Fifth and Sixth Class about safety precautions to observe over the Halloween period.

  • Frása na Míosa- Ní hé lá na báistí lá na bpáistí.

  • On the day we finished school, prior to the Halloween break there was much merriment as children and staff took the opportunity to dress up in scary costumes. This was a lot of fun! In addition, Fred the Party Professor visited and performed some amazing magic tricks. Children also played traditional Halloween games in the afternoon which they really enjoyed!

  • The Aistear theme in Mrs. Shevlin’s room was autumn and Halloween. Pupils had fun in exploratory play, exploring and sorting items such as eyeballs, spiders, bats, leaves and beans. Children also put on masks and had fun with puppets!  In the manipulative play area, students used playdough to make spiders, pumpkin faces and sweets for Halloween. Pictures were created in the creative area from Leaf rubbings. In Art, apples were used to print pumpkins and a spoon was used to print a wall. Details were added when pictures were dry. ‘Pumpkin Soup’ was read and children learnt about friendship and the importance of listening to each other. Finally an experiment was carried out on a pumpkin and some Halloween games were introduced too! Everyone was really looking forward to Oíche Shamhna!
