School Newsletter- January 2023

  • Catholic Schools Week was celebrated at the school. The theme this year was ‘Walking Together in Faith and Love’. Pupils had the opportunity to reflect on their relationship with God, with their school community and with their families.

  • Two teams, one in the Under Eleven Category and one in the Under Thirteen Category represented the school at the Credit Union Quiz in Kilbride, Co Roscommon. On the Under Eleven team were Kiera Roddy, Eloise McDonnell, Sean Hunt and Patrick Duffy while on the Under Thirteen team were Hadley-Jack Burns, Aoibhe Duffy, Kayleigh Duffy and Sean Roddy. Both teams acquitted themselves very well.

  • Ms. Gildea from St. Nathy’s College came to speak with pupils in the senior room. She gave a lot of information to the children regarding subjects, sports and school life in general at St. Nathy’s.

  • The following piece was written by Steven Rush, Sixth Class

On January 25th, my classmates and I visited St. Nathy’s College for the Open Evening. Upon arrival we were told to go to the canteen. There were a lot of people there so I was happy to see some of my friends. Fr Henry spoke first.  He told us about the subjects that are taught at the school as well as the various sports that are played. Then we were split up into groups for a tour of the school. The leader of our group was called Jennifer. The building is very big with lots of rooms. One of my favourite rooms is the engineering room. There were 3D printers which I would really like to know how to use. The projects in the art room were magnificent. I wish I could have had more time to look at them all. When we visited the home economics room my sister and her classmates were there baking buns for everybody. I got to visit many other rooms and saw a lot of teachers. The school is huge so it will take me a while to know where everything is, but overall I think the place is fantastic and I am looking forward to making new friends and trying new subjects.

  • Parent-Teacher meetings were held over two evenings.

  • The lotto winners for January were Killian Roddy, Chloe Loughney and Aoibhe Duffy.

  • Frása na Míosa- Ní neart go cur le chéile.

  • This month’s Aistear theme was shopping. The children played together showing patience and concentration skills to play ‘The Shopping Game.’ The worked together to role play being shopkeepers and customers-some shops were overrun with robbers and others had lost children! Never a dull moment in the shops! Pupils had to read the instructions on playdough mats to make fruit, vegetables, clothes or coins. Teamwork was the word of the day in the small world area, where impressive shopping centres were constructed, complete with areas for animals, play and parking.                                                 Learners read ‘Ag Siopadóireacht le Mamaí’, along with a number of poems centred on the theme. Sa Siopa gave the children opportunity to practise their new Gaeilge vocabulary. ‘Shopping’, a poem about a mischievous young child who loves sitting in the trolley causing havoc was fun to act out, along with the class favourite ‘I Bought a New Banana Skin’, a humourous ditty about someone who loves bananas so much that he dressed up as one!
