School Newsletter- February 2023

  • Fr Gavigan visited the school on The Feast of Saint Blaise. He went into each of the classrooms and told the story of St. Blaise and the reason behind his association with the blessing of throats. We are very grateful to Fr Gavigan for blessing our throats on this special Feast Day.

  • Cillian Boyle, Aoibhe Duffy, Sean Hunt and Kayleigh Duffy participated in the Cumann na mBunscol Sports Quiz in Carracastle.

  • The pupils of Fifth and Sixth Class began their Junior Entrepreneur Programme which gives children the opportunity to experience practical, real-life business learning. The class was divided into groups and each came up with brilliant ideas and prototypes for the project. These concepts and designs included cakes, brownies, shamrock shoes, celebration frames, Kilmovee coasters, well-being packs and “only a ring away bracelets”. This is a fantastic opportunity for the children to build on their team-work skills and discover new talents.

  • A tutor from Drumadore provided workshops for each of the classrooms. Drumadore is Ireland’s largest provider of group drumming lessons. Each child was provided with a drum and the tutor demonstrated various rhythms which the pupils then replicated. Not only was it a music lesson, but children also danced around the drums to the beat of the music. Pupils derived great fun and enjoyment from this very active workshop.

  • Fr Joseph visited the school on Ash Wednesday and administered blessed ashes to mark the start of the Lenten season.

  • Tim Moriarty commenced Gaelic training for Fifth and Sixth Class.

  • Aoibhe Duffy, Kayleigh Duffy, Oisín Lynchehaun, Steven Rush and Cillian Boyle represented the school at East Mayo Scór na bPáistí in the grúpa cheoil section. With a lovely blend of instruments- two concertinas, button accordion, fiddle and banjo we were delighted to learn that they qualified to County level. Eloise McDonnell also competed in the recitation section of the competition with her very humourous rendition of ‘I’m Fine, Thank You’. She also qualified to County Level. Well done to these pupils on their hard work and brilliant performances.

  • Lotto winners were Mrs Meehan, Nathan Duffy, and Orlaith Llongo

  • Frása na Míosa- Gíorraíonn beirt bóthar

  • The Aistear theme in Mrs Shevlin’s room was The Weather. Children had fun discussing the different types of weather and how we can best dress for them. Learners all got busy drawing their favourite types of weather and these drawings were then used as a background as pupils became weather forecast presenters. Everybody worked hard on learning their scripts and presenting their forecasts. Watch out Martin King!
