- The senior boys contested the Cumann na mBunscol Division Four, 7 a side County Final in MacHale Park against Cross National School in what was a game that showcased all that is great in underage Gaelic football. Kilmovee showed both tenacity and character as they clawed their way back from a nine point deficit to lead by one point with only a minute left to play. However a late goal from Cross meant that the much coveted County Title went to the south Mayo side. The final score read 4-8 to 2-11. Runner-up medals were presented to the Kilmovee team by Richie Goggins, Chairman of Mayo Cumann na mBunscol. Go raibh mile maith agat to Mike Raleigh for training our team to such a high standard!
- ‘Active Week’ began with a visit from ‘Heritage in Schools’ expert, Ms Martina Butler. Martina brought the junior pupils on a walk around the school grounds, where they examined and identified a wide variety of insects and leaves. Unfortunately due to the inclement weather, the older pupils were unable to go outdoors. However Ms Butler gave a very engaging power-point presentation, which included such topics as biodiversity, plants and animals native to the local environment, climate-change and the importance of care of our planet.
- The next feature of ‘Active Week’ was provided by Emma Coleman from ECM Dance. Emma got the pupils on their feet by leading them in a variety of dance moves, giving instruction in both hip hop and contemporary genres.
- The annual school tour which was a highlight of ‘Active Week’ saw the senior pupils travel to Galway to the ‘Pure Skill – Indoor Sports Complex’. In teams, children completed ten different challenges based around golf, basketball, rugby, tennis, soccer, hurling, cricket, baseball and Gaelic football. Afterwards the children visited Galway City Museum and viewed the many interesting artefacts on display. They were also treated to a stimulating and thought-provoking tour of the museum with a very knowledgeable staff member. Meanwhile the Junior Pupils paid a visit to Graune Pet Farm, starting the day with a walk around the farm, where they were introduced to Seán the Sheep, Chloe the Llama and many more animals. The children then got ‘up close and personal’ with the resident snake as well as little chickens and puppies. The day continued with fun in the indoor and outdoor play areas, the most memorable features for most, being the ‘walking on water’ and paddle boats. A super time was had by all!
- Sports Day was held once again at the school with the emphasis on participation and fun. Races, novelty events, penalty shoot-outs, parachute games and timed obstacle courses were all included in the line-up. Each pupil was awarded a certificate for partaking in the various activities.
- Each class had a tennis lesson with Tim Clarke.
- Pupils put the finishing touches to their wonderfully creative pieces which they produced with Art Teacher Ms Debbie Hills. Infants and First Class had worked on clay tiles with Debbie and while painting them were introduced to concepts such as harmonious and contrasting colours and the effects that can be achieved by considering this. Learners were justifiably proud of their finished items! Children in Second Class and upwards were engaged in the creation of fairy houses using recycled materials and Das paper clay. Pupils observed how various textures can be achieved through making marks in the clay and how a variety of painting techniques e.g. stippling and highlighting can be used to achieve a 3D illusion. The finished ‘houses’ made a stunning display. Children thoroughly enjoyed the experience of working with Debbie and benefited significantly from her vast expertise in Visual Arts.
- The Connacht Inter County Hurling Go-Games Blitz took place at Galway GAA Centre with Mayo Cumann na mBunscol fielding two teams for the event. Two pupils from the school, brothers Oisín and Declan Duffy were chosen to attend, due to their dedication to hurling at both school and club level. The boys played a pivotal role in the school claiming the Division Two County Title last month.
- Pupils from Third Class and upwards entered an Art competition organised by the Cois Tine Heritage Committee as part of the ‘Bealtaine’ celebrations. The children drew pictures depicting the theme, ‘Be Our Guest’. Winners included Mia Manning-Aurich, Alex Egan, Declan Duffy, Amy Hunt, Aoibhín Boyle, Gráinne Hunt and Aoibhínn Duffy.
- Sixth Class pupil, Peter Horan was chosen to play in Croke Park at the All-Ireland Football Semi-Final, in the Cumann na mBunscol Exhibition Go Games. Peter was selected due to his natural flair, ability and deep commitment to Gaelic football. This was in evidence as the School reached County Finals in both the Mini Sevens and Cumann na mBunscol competitions. Pupils and Staff were delighted for Peter when he received news of this unique opportunity.
- Certificates were presented to students with excellent attendance throughout the year.
- The end of year Mass was celebrated by Fr .Vincent Sherlock, at which we said farewell to Sixth Class. We wish each of them many blessings as they mark new beginnings at Secondary School. We are very proud of how the pupils have developed and shared their skills and talents during their eight years at Kilmovee School and wish them every success in their future endeavours!
