School Newsletter – May 2017
- The Ceremony of Light took place in Kilmovee Church for the Children who were preparing for Confirmation.
- The sacrament of Confirmation was administered by Bishop Brendan Kelly in St. Celsus Church, Kilkelly to the pupils of Fifth and Sixth Classes. The children kindly made a donation to the BUMBLEance Charity from the presents they received on the day. This charity provides essential support to the National Children’s Ambulance Service.
- Children from Second Class received First Holy Communion with the pupils from Tavrane and Kilkelly Schools. Afterwards everybody gathered in the Community Centre for a party organised by the Parents Association.
- The Food Dudes Programme began in school with Infants and First Class participating for a total of sixteen days while Second Class and upwards participated for eight days. Phase One of the Programme saw the provision of a wide variety of fruit and vegetables every day, with the aim of encouraging pupils to eat them on a daily basis. By eating daily portions, children earned rewards such as stickers, pedometers, pencils, cups and drinking bottles. In Phase Two of the Programme, pupils were encouraged to bring fruit and vegetables from home as part of their lunch. Certificates were earned by pupils during this time for making healthy food choices. This was a huge success in our school and tied in with our existing Healthy Eating Policy.
- Children in Second, Third and Fourth Classes planted vegetable and herb seeds with the help of SNA Pauline Regan. The children then took responsibility for looking after their potted seeds and watched with delight as they grew.
- As part of the Bealtaine celebrations organised by the Heritage Committee at Cois Tine, pupils from Third Class and upwards were invited to submit essays with the title ‘Bealtaine-Customs and Traditions’. This involved a lot of research on the part of the pupils and was a very worthwhile endeavour. Prize winners included Oran Frain, Liam Boyle, Amy Hunt, Aoibhínn Duffy, Oisín Duffy, Michael Regan, Amy Sharkey, Caoimhe Duffy, Anna Hughes, Leah Dunney, Sean O’Dowd and Tom Horan. After the prize-giving, pupils joined with their counterparts from Tavrane N.S. and members of Kilmovee Comhaltas in the rendition of a few traditional tunes.
- A talk on ‘Internet Safety’ was given in the school by Ms Helen Butler, to which all parents were invited. A ‘Safe Internet Use’ talk was also given to pupils in Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Classes.
- Coilín Duffy represented the school at the Cumann na mBunscol display games in MacHale Park on the day of the Connacht Quarter Final between Mayo and Sligo.
- The Hurling Team was delighted to contest the Division Two (9-a-side) County Final against Tooreen N.S. and emerged as convincing winners on the day with a scoreline of 3-5 to 0-2. The boys were delighted to be presented with County medals and the Division Two Shield. Thank you to their trainer Mike Raleigh for his dedication to the team and for giving so freely of his time. The School Community unite in their congratulations to the pupils on this outstanding achievement.
- The Scholastic Book Fair was held at the school, giving children and parents an opportunity to browse through and choose age-appropriate books in a relaxed setting.
- For the annual school tour, all classes went to the ‘Let’s Go’ Activity Camp in the Sports Arena in Breaffy, where there were many fun activities in which the children participated.
- As previously stated Fifth and Sixth Classes began work on an Art project inspired by their study of the Famine. This project was funded by The Design and Craft Council of Ireland and The Association of Teacher Education Centres of Ireland. Craftsperson Ms Lisa Fahy was assigned to the class to guide and mentor them on their creative journey. The project saw the creation of a three scene diorama based on events taking place during the famine. A village, a coffin ship and arrival at the Statue of Liberty were all depicted using Papier Mache, with the completed diorama spanning just over six feet. The experience enabled pupils to integrate many subject areas including Art, History, IT and Literacy. Reusing and recycling products was also central to the endeavour. Students learned to evaluate their own work, work as a team and gained a new-found confidence in a variety of creative skills. Finally the pupils, Craftsperson Lisa Fahy and Mrs Deery attended the CRAFTed Showcase at Mayo Education Centre along with other groups from the county, where they had the opportunity to present their project and view those produced by other schools. Leah Dunney sang ‘Isle of Hope’ as part of the presentation, which made for a very moving experience for the assembled crowd. This was a very worthwhile undertaking and one which has had far-reaching positive outcomes for all the pupils!
