School Newsletter-September 2019

  • We welcomed four children into Junior Infants this year, Ava Casey, Orlaith Llongo, Molly Regan and Talia Reid. We were also delighted to welcome brothers, Jenson and Hadley Jack Burns to First Class and Third Class respectively.
  • The following piece was written by Carly Egan, First Class. We went to the library in town in Ballaghaderreen. We sat down and the librarian explained the things we could do there, like come and borrow books. Then we got a book to read. We sat on stools and chairs. The library was great fun!
  • Fr. Sherlock conducted a prayer service to celebrate the start of the new school year, with a special emphasis on welcoming our new pupils. Parents of children in Junior Infants were invited to attend. Afterwards parents and grandparents had an opportunity to chat over a cup of tea!
  • As a special treat, the Committee of the Kilkelly-Kilmovee Parish magazine, arranged for the ice-cream van to pay a visit to the school. Pupils and Staff really enjoyed this delightful surprise!
  • The following article was submitted by Micaela Roddy, Sixth Class. On September 19th, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Class pupils took part in the East Mayo Cross-Country Competitions in Swinford. We had to run one and three quarter times around the course. This was 1200m!  The race was very tough. I came in 7th place in the Girls Competition. Oran Frain, also a 6th Class pupil, came in 8th place in the Boys Competition. Everyone in our school finished the course and were very happy to get a wrist band. There were over one hundred children in each competition. Billy was our bus driver and we all went to the shop on our way home. The best part for me was when Oran and I were presented with medals. On Thursday, September 26th, Oran and I represented our school at the Cross-Country Finals in Belleek. We were placed in the top one third of the field. The county course was more challenging, but I was happy to finish it!
  • The Aistear theme in Mrs Shevlin’s Classroom was; At the Doctor. In the Construction Area, children built hospitals and made medicine and bandages from playdough. Pupils also made x-rays and doctors’ headbands. Learners examined patients, wrote prescriptions and got medicine in the pharmacy. Children also had great fun playing ‘Operation’.
