- We also welcomed Ms. Claire Callaghan to the staff, as she covers the Principal release days in our local cluster. Congratulations to Ms. Orna Fahey who previously held this post, before securing a permanent job in St. Attracta’s N.S in Ballaghaderreen.
- Pupils from Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Class attended the East Mayo National Schools’ Cross Country competition at Mellett’s Hill in Swinford. Two of our students finished in 14th and 21st places respectively. Well done to everyone who participated and completed the course.
- We were thrilled once again this year to hear the familiar jingle of the ice-cream van on a beautiful day in September. Many thanks to the Committee of the Kilkelly-Kilmovee Parish magazine for providing this wonderful treat!
- Thank you to Mrs. Geraldine Duffy who has maintained the beautiful window boxes for the past number of months.
- On Friday night, September 23rd, we gathered to celebrate the retirement of our most esteemed, former Principal, Ms. Mary Warde. Mass was concelebrated by Fr. Joseph Gavigan and Fr. Farrell Cawley in Kilmovee Parish Church. Former pupils, parents and staff members participated through the Readings and Prayers of the Faithful. Fr Gavigan acknowledged the enormous contribution Mrs Warde has made in her role as teacher and latterly as Principal of Kilmovee School. Following the Mass, everybody adjourned to the Community Centre for refreshments. Local musicians provided a backdrop of traditional tunes which added to the ambience of the evening. Presentations were made by representatives of the Board of Management and Parents’ Association. Staff members Mrs. Meehan, Mrs. Shevlin and Ms. Kedian then paid tribute to Mrs. Warde, referencing her many attributes- most notably her quick wit, approachability and ability to connect with people. Her years as Infant teacher in a multi-grade setting were remembered and more recently her role as Principal, a role at which she excelled. It was noted how fitting it was, that this celebration was held on Culture Night, as culture and pride of place were always at the heart of Mrs Warde’s teaching ethos. Finally Mrs Warde herself addressed the gathering, in a highly entertaining but poignant speech. Everybody was captivated by anecdotes of her early career which encompassed teaching positions in nearby Cloontia, Wicklow and New York. In 1993 Mary was appointed as Infant teacher in her native Kilmovee. She enjoyed twenty five years with Infants and First Class before becoming Principal in 2018. Mrs Warde thanked everybody for the contribution they made in making the night such a memorable occasion. The lovely atmosphere of the evening reflected the outpouring of goodwill to Mary as she begins a new chapter of her life. Mrs Warde is wished good health and happiness in the many years ahead and is thanked for her friendship and kindness throughout her teaching career. Bail ó Dhia ar an obair go léir atá déanta agat a Mháire!
- There was one lucky lotto winner this month-Molly Regan!
- Frása na míosa-Ní thagann ciall roimh aois.
- The Aistear theme in Mrs. Shevlin’s room for the month of September was ‘My Friends and I’. Using the story of “The Ugly Duckling” as a stimulus, pupils learned that everyone is different and that it’s important to be kind to all. The theme was explored during Aistear through use of playdough, Small World, Junk Art and Lego, where children worked on turn taking and team work. Learners reviewed the alphabet through games and took turns on the whiteboard forming letters.
