School Newsletter – February 2017
- Catholic Schools Week was celebrated, the highlight of which was Grandparents’ Day. Fr Sherlock conducted a short prayer service to which all Grandparents had been invited. He emphasised the importance of Grandparents in the lives of children and the positive impact they can have in faith formation. The School Band then entertained the visitors with a few popular tunes, after which the adults were treated to refreshments. It was a very enjoyable day for all who gathered for this worthwhile occasion.
- Stephen Shiel, Coilin Duffy, Tom Horan and Sean O’Dowd claimed second prize at the local area Cumann na mBunscol Sports Quiz. They then progressed to County Level at which they finished in a very creditable fifth place.
- Pupils in Second, Third and Fourth Classes had the opportunity of attending the Féile Drámaíochta in Kilmovee Community Centre to watch the Irish plays performed on stage. They enjoyed this very much.
- Pupils in Fifth and Sixth Classes began an Art project which saw them work with Artist Lisa Fahy over five sessions. The objective was to produce a representation of ‘famine times’ using papier mache construction. The children set to work on this task with zeal, ahead of an Exhibition Day in Castlebar Education Centre later in the year.
- The Aistear theme in Mrs Warde’s classroom was; Magnets. Children had the opportunity to experiment with magnets, learn associated vocabulary-push, pull, repel, attract etc. and see the everyday uses of magnets. They learned about the South and North Poles, explorers who went on expeditions there and experimented with magnet painting. They listened to the story of Tom Crean, had a magnetic treasure hunt and brought in their favourite fridge magnets!
