School Newsletter-May 2019
- In the Cumann na mBunscol Gaelic football competition, the girls came third in the local area competition. Meanwhile the boys qualified to compete in the Division Four County Semi-Final which saw them successfully overcome Glencastle and thus qualify for the County Final in June. This news was met with huge excitement from fellow pupils, teachers and parents alike.
- Fifth and Sixth Classes were afforded the opportunity of a
four week module in which they studied French under the tutelage of Mrs
Kathleen Lynch. Pupils learned about the country, its culture and some French
vocabulary. Past pupils have reported that this was a very beneficial
experience ahead of starting at secondary school.
- Congratulations to First Communicants-Steven Rush, Nathan
Duffy, Ethan McCormack, Cillian Boyle, Keith Regan and Sean Roddy. The children
received First Eucharist with pupils from Tavrane and Kilkelly Schools in
Kilmovee Church and celebrated afterwards at a party in the Community Centre.
- The pupils who made their Confirmation made a donation of
three hundred euro to the charity Bóthar. The donation was used to purchase a
goat for a Third World family to set them on the road to self-sufficiency. A
certificate was received by the class to acknowledge their generosity and
kindness.
- A Scholastic Book-Fair was held in the school, the aim of
which is to encourage children to explore the enjoyment to be gained from books
and reading. The Fair was a huge success, with children deriving much pleasure
through the browsing and purchase of reading material. Many thanks to the
parents for their support of this venture.
- Induction day for next year’s Junior Infants took place at
the school.
- Congratulations to Michael Regan who was chosen to represent
the school at the Cumann na mBunscol Exhibition Games at the Connacht
Semi-Final between Mayo and Roscommon. Michael displayed his varied skills
which he has honed through his involvement in both school and club football.
- The pupils in Mrs Shevlin’s classroom visited Ballaghaderreen
Library where they heard stories, read aloud and sang along to some stories
like Wonky Donkey! It was an
enjoyable experience in which all of the children participated. During the
month of May, the children in Infants and First Class participated in STEM
activities. They had a lot of fun creating a model of a rope bridge that had to
hang between two ‘cliffs’. They also enjoyed creating a pirate ship that had to
float in water. Watch out for these future engineers and scientists!
- The boys hurling team overcame the challenge of Irishtown
National School in the Division Two, County Semi-Final of the Cumann na
mBunscol Competition. The game was played at Canon Henry Park in Kilmovee and
the victory secured a safe passage to a County Final in MacHale Park, Castlebar
on May 27th. The County Final appearance saw Kilmovee take on Behy National
School in an exciting encounter which took place in wet and blustery conditions.
However the cohesive and sparkling performance exhibited by Kilmovee, ensured
that the Division Two Shield returned to the school for a third year in
succession. In the end, the Kilmovee boys ran out easy winners on a scoreline
of 5-06 to 5 points. Team captain Oisin Duffy made a gracious speech, in which
he expressed gratitude to the opposing team for a sporting match and to parents
and Principal Mrs Warde for their support. Huge thanks and appreciation also
goes to Mr Mike Raleigh, for the time he has spent in developing the boys’
skills and for his attention to detail in preparing the team for each contest
they have faced. Well done boys on this huge achievement and congratulations
from the whole school community!
