• Pupils from Second Class and upwards took part in a writing competition for local schools organised by the Kenny/Naughton Committee in Aghamore. This year children were invited to submit stories or poems with the title, ‘A Little White Lie’. Congratulations to the following winners- Aoibhín Boyle, Gemma Rush, Emma Shiel, Cillian Boyle, Steven Rush, Seán Roddy, Keith Regan, Sean Hunt and Aoibhe Duffy.
• With the start of the cold winter months, it was decided to build and erect a bug hotel to provide a place of shelter for insects in the school grounds. Insects such as bees, butterflies, moths, flies and beetles are important pollinators. Without these important pollinators most of the plants we use for food would disappear. Key to creating the ‘hotel’ is ensuring that there are cracks, crevices, nooks and crannies for a range of different types of insects. It is our intention that children will see and examine these creatures at close quarters! We also hope that through caring for the bug hotel, we will foster in our pupils an appreciation for the environment and the miracle of nature!
• The following paragraph was written by Mia Manning-Aurich, Fourth Class. Mrs Warde our Principal organised the Green Committee. In it we have Alex Egan, Gemma Rush and I. Our job is to refill the bird feeders, check on the bug hotel and turn off lights, computers and i-pads at break times. We are turning off things because we want to save electricity, which is good for the environment. Gemma thought of getting a diary. We will take a picture of the birds at the feeders, look them up on the i-pads and then write down their names in the diary. It is very fun being part of the Green Committee.
• Pupils from Second Class and upwards had the opportunity of having two sessions of tuition at the Athletics Centre in Claremorris. Pupils got to run on the outdoor track and were instructed in hurdles, long jump, high jump and relay.
• Parent-Teacher meetings were held at the school and were well attended.
• The following article was written by Conor Duffy, Fourth Class. Third and Fourth Class boys all went to Futsal in Charlestown. This was a non-competitive soccer event for schools from all around East Mayo. Kilmovee N.S had three games, we were playing Derrinabruck, Cloonlyon and Charlestown. We beat Charlestown. We lost to Derrinabruck and Cloonlyon also. It was five a side but we all got game time. The people who were on the team were Nathan, Cillian, Sean, Michael, Alex, Hadley-Jack, Ethan, Steven, Keith and I was the captain. Mrs Meehan was our manager and Aaron McNamara was here for work experience and came with us. We all had a good time.
• Well done to Alex Egan who designed and made a Halloween costume for a competition sponsored by Mayo County Council. The objective was to prioritise using second hand clothes and recycled materials as part of ‘Reuse Month’. Alex put his imagination and creativity to work and designed a bunny costume, in keeping with his great love of rabbits! He then e-mailed a photo of himself in the costume to Mayo County Council and was delighted to learn a few weeks later that he was a prize winner. He was rewarded with a family pass to Castlebar Leisure Centre. Congratulations to this budding young designer!
• Garda Karen Weymouth visited the school in her role as Community Liaison Officer. Karen is based in Charlestown and during her visit, spoke to Fifth and Sixth Class pupils on the topics of Internet safety, bullying and cyber bullying. This was most informative and tied in with Stay Safe which is currently being taught in all classes.
• Congratulations to the quiz team who represented the school at the recent Ballaghaderreen Library Quiz, achieving second place. They now go forward to compete at Roscommon County Level. Well done to Oran Frain, Liam Boyle, Declan Duffy and Ewan Duffy.
• We welcomed two new staff members who will be with us until the end of the school year- Ms Orna Fahey in Mrs Shevlin’s room and Mr Brian Duffy who will be covering for Ms Kedian. We wish them both well in their new posts.
• The Aistear theme in Mrs Shevlin’s room was The Restaurant. Socio-dramatic area-; Children had a play kitchen with lots of replica food and utensils. Pupils role-played characters such as the chef, waiter/waitress, front of house and customers. Design-; Children designed posters advertising their own restaurant or take-away. They had a variety of food available and the posters were colourful and eye-catching! Construction-; Learners all built their own versions of restaurants or things belonging in a restaurant, e.g. tables, chairs, cooker or fridge. Art-; Children had lots of fun designing their own chef/ waiter aprons!
